PCP on DVD - 21 Jump Street

Remakes and adaptations are all over the place in Hollywood.  2012 has brought us several notable ones including the Amazing Spider-Man, Total Recall, and this one:  21 Jump Street.  Some remakes have been terrible (Fame, Footloose) and some great (Amazing Spider-Man, Fright Night).  Unfortunately, remakes can be a bit of hit or miss.  Fortunately, 21 Jump Street knocked it out of the park.

21 Jump Street - 2012; rated R.  My rating:  9 out of 10.

Early in 21 Jump Street a character says a line that sets the tone for the whole film:

"We're reviving a cancelled undercover police program from the eighties and revamping it for modern time. See, the guys in charge of this stuff lack creativity and are completely out of ideas."

That line had me laughing so hard because it was so funny and unexpected it nearly had me have my drink come out my nose.  It's not every day that a film remake or adaptation is so blatantly willing to have a great time, even if it means making fun of the source material and leaning on the 4th wall a little bit.  And the film version of the TV hit 21 Jump Street definitely makes fun of the source material, and it is actually supposed to be a direct descendant of the show, as characters from the show put in minor appearances.

Both the laughs and the action are rather non-stop in this extremely enjoyable film.  Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum both turn in great performances and they make for an entertaining duo.  I'm already looking forward to the inevitable sequel to this hilarious movie.  If you missed this in theaters, immediately add it to your Netflix queue because this one is definitely worth watching.
