I like to enjoy the occasional sports movie, as a sports fan myself. This entry into the sporting films pantheon is actually quite enjoyable, and at 92 minutes isn't that long either.
Goon - 2012, rated R. My rating: 7 out of 10
Goon tells the story of an unlikely hockey player, Doug Glatt (Sean William Scott), loosely based on the true story of pro hockey player Doug Smith. Glatt is a bouncer at a bar, who happens to be able to fight better than pretty much everyone, and can also take a pounding himself. He is recruited onto a minor league team despite the fact that he can barely skate, after getting into a fight (and winning) with players on the team. He goes through a training montage to learn how to actually play hockey, but he has been primarily recruited to the league for one reason and one reason only, to be a goon, aka the enforcer for the team that fights players on the other team, brought onto the ice to fire up his teammates and help them win.
Along the way he encounters Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber), a soon to be retiring goon that Glatt looks up to on the ice, and you know pretty obviously (since they're on different teams) that sooner or later the two of them will have to have an epic hockey fight. And epic it is, along with all of the other hockey action scenes. The film is also very funny. Overall, if you are a sports fan I strongly encourage you to check this one out!

FML - 15 days until 5k!
So my wife and I have been running for about 10 weeks now, and are registered for our first 5k on 11/17. In our training for the 5k, we have both finally been able to successfully complete one (albeit on a treadmill) at a pace that we were comfortable at (about 15 minutes to a mile). Unfortunately, that is slow as all heck, so we have two weeks to step up our pace a little bit so our time isn't completely laughable.
The Couch to 5k app that we used to start our program was definitely very helpful in slowly but steadily building up our endurance, and I do recommend it. Now if anyone has any suggestions for building up our speed without completely killing our endurance, I would appreciate the tips!
Ultimately, my own goals for running are to increase my speed to a 12 minute mile for the short term, so when we do 5Ks in the spring we can break the 36 minute mark, then to eventually get down to around a 10 minute mile. I know I can eventually meet that pace, because back in high school running 3 miles in 30 minutes was a prerequisite to be a defenseman on the lacrosse team (midfielders had to do it in 25). Also, we plan on competing in the Big 10K next summer, a 10K sponsored by the Big Ten conference where you run representing your school. After the 10Ks the next goal is to maybe get up to a half marathon. I'm not sure if I want to take it that far though, or if my knees can handle it either. We'll see!
The one nice thing is that when we run outdoors with the jogging stroller we can at least keep our son with us so it is some nice family time. Unfortunately it is getting a bit too cold to consistently do that. Thankfully, our gym has on site daycare so we can just drop him off there and run.

Michigan football + zombies = win?
So I wrote a post for MGoBlog.com that I'm going to link to here, as opposed to recreating the whole post. It compares the opponents Michigan faced/will face this season to the zombies from the videogame Left 4 Dead 2. If you are interested in a little zombie horror/football crossover action, I recommend you check it out! Enjoy!

POS - Olympics Fail & Win
So unless you are in a coma and having someone reading my posts to you aloud (extremely doubtful) you're aware the Olympics are going on right now. I like the Olympics, and although I cannot watch as much of it as I'd like to (the drawbacks of actually having to work for a living) that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy it as much as I can. So in the course of this enjoyment, I have come across a couple .gif files that I would like to share with you. The first is probably one of the most embarrasing Olympics moments ever - a guy loses his grip on his leg while diving, and it causes him to break his somersaults and backflop into the water. All I can say to this is "Ouch!"
And the second comes from the U.S. womens' soccer team's gold medal victory over Japan, an incredible save from goalie Hope Solo. This save sealed the win and the gold for team USA. America! F*** Yeah!
I'm already looking forward to the 2016 games, because being in Rio they'll be closer to our time zone so maybe we'll get more live events instead of tape delay. One can hope so anyways, right?
